Examples of possible excursions

The following descriptions are intended to give you a taste of possible tours. However, both the length and the route of your tour are freely selectable and do not have to correspond to the examples below.

Erigat el-Aoûd – 3 days

The trip begins where the road ends: the village of Mhamid. A landscape of sand broken sporadically by tamarisk trees leads into Oued el-Naâm (Valley of the Ostriches) where, after a rare rainfall, various desert flowers appear. Then comes a spot which, although seldom visited by tourists, is worth the journey: Erigat el-Aoûd (the Dunes of the Horses). The route back to Mhamid circles Ras el-Nkhel (the End of the Palm Groves), crosses once-cultivated land and meanders through the present date groves.

The Draâ Valley – 5 days

This tour has its point of departure close to the old but still inhabited Kasbah of Tamegroute, notable for its Zawiyya and for the Koranic library, where 800-year old books are preserved. The pottery at Tamegroute is also worth a visit. After setting off, the route passes through rugged mountain terrain that gives way to rocky plains, before heading through the Draâ Valley. After descending again through the date palm groves and passing Bougawar (the Dune of the Crow) and the Kasbah and Zawiyya of Sidi Salah, it reaches a landscape filled with small sand dunes. The tour ends at Walid Driss, a peaceful village 6km from Mhamid, clustered around an old Kasbah and its museum.

Taste of the Sahara – 8 days

This tour sets off from Mhamid and immediately enters a terrain of sand dunes and tamarisks, and one quickly forgets the bustle of urban life. This is followed by a rocky, barren plateau, devoid of vegetation, lending the landscape an almost lunar aspect. This changes abruptly as you come to Bougarne (the ‘Horn’ Dunes), after which the Oued el-Atash (the Valley of Thirst) leads you to the sacred Oasis. Here the camels are able to quench their thirst at the well.

After the Oasis, the route sets off again towards Chegaga across a desert of cracked and fissured earth. The towering sand dunes of Chegaga, 200m in height, offer an unforgettable perspective over a ‘sea of sand’. The two-day crossing of this ‘sea’ takes you to the dry lake bed of Iriqi. From here the 4x4s will drive you to Foum Zguid, crossing the Oued Mdour (Rotating Valley) on the way and affording you a horizon of mountains in the shape of a tajine. After Foum Zguid you will enter the High Atlas, passing through Taznakht, famous for its carpets, and finishing in Ouarzazate.

If you prefer, it is possible to complete the tour with the camels instead of 4x4s, naturally adding to the length of the trip, but allowing you to end the tour in either Foum Zguid or Mhamid.
